high / low project

Since I’m obsessed with bargain hunting (what is the point in paying full price if you don’t have to???), I decided to do my own little high / low project experiment.

Check it out below:  the items on the top are from high-end design sources, totaling over $8,900.   The bottom is a collection of items I found online to create a similar look,  but for a LOT less – like $5,700 less!   Unbelievable – almost 65% off.

HOW CAN THIS BE??

I bet I know what you’re thinking right now:  How can there be such a difference in price?  There’s many different reasons and it can get pretty complex.  First of all, contrary to common belief, it isn’t usually because of an exorbitant designer markup.  (Most designers or stores price items at or around the suggested retail price.)   There’s less overhead selling online than there is with a physical retail storefront.   Most of the online discount retailers are dealing so much merchandise they can afford to cut the price margin way lower than the retail price you’d see in stores.  Also, although stylistically they may look similar, the manufacturing process and materials may not be as high of quality.

For example, the sofa on the high-end project is a Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams sofa, and the one in the budget friendly side is from Pottery Barn.  Pottery Barn’s upholstery line is made by Mitchell Gold, but since PB sofas are mass-produced, the detailing is less refined and fewer seat and fabric options are available………. so the price point is lower than a custom produced sofa from Mitchell Gold.

MY RULE OF THUMB

So which items are best to buy discounted, and what should you splurge on?  For me it’s simple:  Anything small like lamps, pillows, accessories, or end tables are a great idea to get for less.  These are things you can swap in and out easily.  It won’t break the bank AND it gives you the freedom to update your look more often.  Upholstery that you spend most of your time in (such as a sofa or your favorite chair) should be something you splurge on, because you want it last a long time and be comfy!  Bedroom furniture, cabinets, and other large casegoods are also important pieces – look for a sturdy material that is contructed well.  You may pay extra, but remember the old saying: you get what you pay for!

color story: tangerine + teal

What says “helllooo summer” more than sunny tangerine and refreshing teal??  Tangerine was named Pantone’s 2012 Color of the year, and teal is one of the hottest colors right now.  Pair them together and you get a match made in hue heaven.   Orange and Blue are actually opposites on the color wheel – meaning they naturally compliment each other.  (Whoever said opposites attract was dead on!)    What do you think??

must have outdoor fabric & furniture just in time for summer

Hello friends!  The unofficial start to summer is officially here.  I’m ready to get outdoors this weekend…  No better way to enjoy your outdoor space then to jazz it up with colorful fabrics and comfy furniture!

First I bring you my 2 favorite collections of indoor/outdoor fabrics right now: Echo Design & Windsor Smith by Kravet.

Not only are these fabrics gorgeous, but also durable enough to withstand the outdoor elements or toughest indoor abuse.

ECHO DESIGN

Back in 1923, Echo began as a scarf company.  After 3 generations, Echo has grown into a global design company with a wide range of fashion accessories and home decorative products.  As a fusion of classic design with modern American sensibility,  Echo’s fabrics launched earlier this year are a combination of “vivid color palettes of sky blues, lime greens, rich oranges and sophisticated neutrals”.

bringing the outdoors inside

One of the best ways to breathe life into a room is to bring what’s outdoors, in.  Earthy inspired spaces are all the buzz right now.  More than just a trend, embracing the beauty of nature creates a timeless feel.  Freshening up your space has never been so easy.

Tip #1:  Use natural materials as architectural elements.

.

.

.

Wood beams or floors. Stone fireplaces. River Rock surfaces.  All so beautiful.  And they create such a focal point.

.

Tip #2: Accessorize with plants, rocks, and trees.

(Source: Apartment Therapy)

Items like potted plants, fresh flowers, tree stumps or branches, and stones add a little something to a space.

.

Indoor plants done tastefully can bring a great pop of color to your space, and also promote healthy, breathable environments by improving indoor air quality.

.

Tip #3:  Incorporate furniture and fabrics made from natural materials

.

Furniture made from rustic wood or woven grass is eye-catching.  Using fabrics like linen or cotton have a more refreshing effect then those like nylon or polyester.

.

Tip #4:  Implementing green products and sustainable practices into the design

The above picture shows a piece of wall art made from live succulents.

.

Close up

.

A canopy made from renewable willow.  Other popular rapidly renewable materials include bamboo, cork, and wool.

.

Tip #5:  Use a crisp, neutral earthy color palette

Using whites and earth tones can make a space feel light and airy.  This can open up an entire room, making it seem larger.

.

How have you brought the outdoors into your home?

Dallas Market, continued

Now to part dos of my Dallas Market Trip.

The Global Views showroom was my absolute favorite.  They did such a great job of putting together their displays and color stories.  Plus their line of goods is just phenomenal.

.

Tangerine and Grey!! Pure genius.

.

Close up of the chair in the corner.  Traditional meets contemporary!

.

More Tangerine and grey!

.

Marble top coffee table.  The base is pretty sweet too.

.

Fun accessories.

.

Tree Table!  What a cool concept for a restaurant: a long bench on one side with tables and side chairs.

.

This room was FANTASTICAL.  Blue and green and peacock all over! So fun.

.

Love these accessories.

.

Cool lounge chair

.

Love the design of the back of the chair too.

.

These little treasures are what I found in a couple of the cash & carry stores.  Cheap-o and so cute.

Can you believe this scarf was $7??

.

.

I think these earrings were about $18 for all 3!!

.

All in all, Dallas was a success! 🙂
