5 man rooms that women dig

With the Super Bowl right around the corner, here’s my tribute to a man’s dream room aka the Man Cave.   Actually, I kinda loathe the term “man cave”.  I’m not a feminist extremist by any means, but it kinda suggests that women can not or would not want to participate in the space.  Personally, I like to watch sports and play video games.   And please explain to me what is so cool about a cave?  The space doesn’t have to dark, dingy, and isolated to be a “man’s” room.  Actually it can be the exact opposite.

So take some notes, boys: whether it’s compromising with the wifey, or creating a bachelor pad that doesn’t turn off the women, here are some rooms that a man can enjoy but are also chick-friendly.

.

CASE #1: The Game Room

.

Why it works for the guy:  It’s got rad toys like the ping-pong table and old school arcade games.  And also lots of wood so it brings the outdoors inside.

Why girls love it:  This room is fashionable yet fun.  It’s stylish and open, and we love that every inch of every wall is not covered by sports memorabilia or beer mirrors.

.

CASE #2: The library

Why it works for the guy:  leather sofa, plaid, and deep dark colors.

Why girls love it:  Because it’s warm and cozy.  And we love the flowers in the corner.

.

CASE #3:  The Living Space

Why it works for the guy: The giant map, old trunk, and rustic accents give this room a real masculine feel.

Why girls love it:  It’s clean and laid back, but also classy.  Map and camera suggests you are into traveling or culture, which can earn you some brownie points!

.

CASE #4:  The Outdoor Bar

outdoor bar

Why it works for the guy:  It’s got the great outdoors and beer. What else does a guy need? (Actually it needs a grill and then we’re set)

Why girls love it:  There’s ample space for entertaining or relaxing.

.

CASE #5:  The Garage Fitness Room

garage work out room

Why it works for the guy: It would function perfect as a home gym too. Add a couple of weights, machines, and a TV and you’re set.

Why girls love it:  It’s a playful space that isn’t too macho. The whole family can hang out here.

.

Summary:

  • Man rooms can be painted light colors and still be masculine.  White or other neutrals work too.
  • Don’t overdo the wood – you don’t need the space to have wood from the floor to ceiling to scream “I’m manly!”
  • Tell a story of who you are.  Do you enjoy traveling? Or sports?  Or movies? Find creative ways to highlight who you are.  Have your space reflect your accomplishments and goals.
  • Less is more.  Try not to clutter up the surfaces and walls with just “stuff”.  Select your art and accessories wisely.  And that thing called cleaning – do it.  🙂 haha.

color story: mint + beige

So 2013 is the year of Emerald according to Pantone.  Instead of boring you with yet another post about it, I will introduce its distant relative, and equally as fashionable counterpart: mint.   Mint is popping up everywhere, from the runway to furniture pieces.

It’s serene and refreshing.  Pair it with a creamy beige or khaki!  Here’s some inspiration shots….

belgian chic with a dose of color

Believe it or not, I’m finally going through my insanely huge stack of magazine subscriptions from 2012… and I just came across this project in the September Color Issue of House Beautiful.

I’m loving the large light fixtures, crisp white, natural textures, and pops of color.  I’m also loving the fact that my Verellen Thibaut sofa is center stage in this shot.  (Mine is a much smaller size!)

Verellen is like the Mercedes-Benz of slipcovered furniture.  It just doesn’t get much better. I’m talking quality linen fabrics straight from Belgium. Each frame is handcrafted in a way that is stylish, comfortable and “sexy” as owner Tom Verellen would put it. (I met Tom a couple of years back when I was at Pizitz, and he’s a character!)

When I lived in Florida, I worked in a shop in Seaside that looked practically identical to this pic.   That being said, if you ever go to Seaside,  you have to stop in Pizitz Home & Cottage!

I’m a fan of the bold orange.  It gives the space life.

DIY idea:  stitch a large square of fabric and either drape on a wall or wrap a canvas with it to create a simple yet striking piece of art.

Adding darker tones gives this space a more formal feel.

This palette is soothing.  Ahhh I could totally relax here.

70’s Malibu inspired home

It seems like lately I’m drawn to all these California-esque homes.  First Holiday in the Hills and now this!

I picked up the Oct/Nov issue of Urban Home Magazine and this project was featured on the cover.  Designed by local San Antonio firm, Baxter Design Group,  this home is a refreshing breeze of So-Cal eclectic style with organic touches.  It has a laid back, retro feel mingled with just the right amount of modern.  I had the chance to view this home back in May – it was part of the San Antonio Parade of Homes, featuring custom home builders Mattern & FitzGerald.

Exterior

In the article, builder Kevin FitzGerald describes how the client “wanted a house with soul and natural materials that were understated, yet elegant. We chose to design and build a home that would be low on ‘stuff’ and rich on texture.”

The planning period for this home took 5 months of getting to know the client’s hopes, dreams, and desires.  It paid off – the end result is gorgeous!

holiday in the {hollywood} hills

Did anyone catch the this month’s Lonny mag??

I just had to point out the awesome home of L.A. based designer Mark D. Sikes.   It’s insane how effortless a home can appear while remaining so refined in the smallest of details.  While you’re drooling, take note of all the natural elements that give the space a serene and earthy atmosphere.  Here’s a few of the highlights:

I’m loving the neutral, soothing palette.

How cute are these little white mini pumpkins for each place setting?!

This is such a welcoming and comfortable kitchen, especially with the seating area and built-in book storage in close proximity.

Tile + mirror = winning combo

Ahh so cozy.

Striped awning: I see you!!

Wow what gorgeous views!!  And the landscaping flows perfectly.
