Freedom Tower design: the World Trade Center lives on

As we reflect on the events that occurred on this day 12 years ago, there is hope being built where the original World Trade Center once stood.  Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill have designed what is the tallest building in the country: the Freedom Tower.   Soaring at 1,776 feet, One World Trade Center will not only be a symbolic structure, but also the first of its kind.  We’re talking 3 MILLION square feet of office space (71 floors!).   New technology and sustainable features will pave the way for the future of urban design.  Achieving the LEED Gold Certification level, 1 WTC will use rainwater to power its cooling systems, and exceed code requirements for energy performance by 20%.

Scroll down to see what the 1 WTC is projected to look like!

“The tower is an open, welcoming building that both radiates light and is filled with light. Our design team has achieved our goal of creating a great urban place — a building that serves the people who work in it, welcomes those who visit it, and plays an integral and vibrant role in the city that surrounds it.”

– David Childs, Freedom Tower Architect

v & v turns 1!

One year ago today I started this blog!   When I think about it, I can’t help but reminisce about how things were last year at this time:  we’d just moved to Texas and I was just getting settled in.  I didn’t have a job yet, and the blog was a hobby, born out of an excess amount of time I wasn’t used to having.   Today,  I’ve been at my job nearly a year, gotten to know (and adore) the town we live in, and this place has become home.  It’s been a crazy adventure, but really we’ve just combed the surface.   And the blog is still young and has a lot of growing to do…but isn’t that true with almost every aspect of life?  As my creative outlet, I feel very blessed to take the time to share daily inspiration with others.    Thanks to those who love it as much as I do!

I’ll take the seat by the window

I have a fascination with window seats.  For me, design is not just about something looking pretty-  it also has to serve a purpose.  The window seat does just that:  it’s the perfect combo of form and function.  When we finally take the plunge and purchase our own little piece of heaven, I’m determined to have one.  But until then I will have to get my fix by searching the web!

.

A cute lil spot where you can curl up and read a book, or just relax and enjoy the view.  What could possibly be better? (PS. that little wall sconce was a fabulous idea!)

.

I love how this space combines the window seat with floor to ceiling built-in bookcases.  This is the perfect reading nook!!

.

Another great quality: since they’re built in, they don’t take up much space!

.

I’m loving this view.

This great little window seat was born after design studio remodel in Detroit, and was later featured on Design Sponge. I love how it embraces the view, while the drapery softens the space at the same time.  And the table makes it a great area to gather over food and conversation.

Genevieve Gorder’s stylish new rug line

Has anyone else noticed that HGTV’s Genevieve Gorder has a new rug collection???  I’m way impressed with these simple yet beautiful patterns.  Here’s the 4 collections I saw on One Kings Lane over the weekend (fyi: by the time I get around to blogging of course the sale is over 😦 – but you can get them through a Capel Rug dealer).
