Pigeon & Poodle: all in the details

Design really is in the details.

The larger pieces always seem to be the main focus of the designer, but we have to be careful not to lose sight of the smaller details and accessories we put into each project.  It’s these pretty little things that give the design character and make it unique.  Even the most minimal or simple designs will need to be carefully refined.

A few months back I found this wonderful accessories company called Pigeon and Poodle.  (Great name, right??)  They specialize in bath accessories, but also carry other home items like frames and baskets.  Their product line is inspired from nature and world travel, so each piece has its own story.  Beautiful handcrafted trays made from capiz shells (as shown below), marble soap dishes, and onyx tissue boxes are just a few of the offerings in their bath collection.

Here’s some of my favorites:

Pigeon and Poodle kicked off 2013 debuting at the Atlanta Gift Show, New York Gift Show and Las Vegas Market, and have been featured in House Beautiful.   I think big things are in store for these guys!  Their products are sold to the trade only, but visit their website to see full collections @ http://www.pigeonandpoodle.com .

color story: chartreuse + plum

Chartreuse and Plum: A dynamic duo.  Fresh and spunky, yet deep and powerful.  They are not your usual couple, but hey I’ve heard opposites attract.  Even as bold as each color is, these two can share the spotlight together if done correctly.

Both colors a  little muted here and they compliment each other beautifully.

.better homes and gardens purple and green room

The key is to blend the greens and purples with other neutrals, browns, blacks, or whites. Mixing in rich brown tones and/or black (as shown above) gives off a luxurious feel.  Or use white in the color scheme (shown below) to achieve a more serene & sophisticated environment.

Using gold with these 2 colors looks great too!

celebrity homes: will ferrell + john legend

Ahh so glad it’s Friday. I’m beyond ready for the weekend.  I was on AD’s website earlier and saw these two beautiful homes.  The first crib is home to the very talented musical star John Legend.  The 2nd belongs to one of my favorite actors & comedians, Will Ferrell.

John Legend’s Los Angeles Home

Tucked in the Hollywood Hills, this 60’s home’s style is “chic and tailored but also earthy and casual” according to the singer/songwriter, who shares the home with his fiance.

The contrast of light and dark, mixed use of materials, and organic shapes are what makes the space so special.

Will Ferrell’s New York Loft

Located downtown NYC, this space was transformed from a dark and crumbling Victorian-era printing factory to a bright and airy residence to Will, his wife, and 3 kids.  It’s an unexpectedly upscale and sophisticated home for such a funny guy.

So which celeb has the better designed home, Will or John??  What would you rather have: a city loft or the mansion in the hills?

color story: mint + beige

So 2013 is the year of Emerald according to Pantone.  Instead of boring you with yet another post about it, I will introduce its distant relative, and equally as fashionable counterpart: mint.   Mint is popping up everywhere, from the runway to furniture pieces.

It’s serene and refreshing.  Pair it with a creamy beige or khaki!  Here’s some inspiration shots….

belgian chic with a dose of color

Believe it or not, I’m finally going through my insanely huge stack of magazine subscriptions from 2012… and I just came across this project in the September Color Issue of House Beautiful.

I’m loving the large light fixtures, crisp white, natural textures, and pops of color.  I’m also loving the fact that my Verellen Thibaut sofa is center stage in this shot.  (Mine is a much smaller size!)

Verellen is like the Mercedes-Benz of slipcovered furniture.  It just doesn’t get much better. I’m talking quality linen fabrics straight from Belgium. Each frame is handcrafted in a way that is stylish, comfortable and “sexy” as owner Tom Verellen would put it. (I met Tom a couple of years back when I was at Pizitz, and he’s a character!)

When I lived in Florida, I worked in a shop in Seaside that looked practically identical to this pic.   That being said, if you ever go to Seaside,  you have to stop in Pizitz Home & Cottage!

I’m a fan of the bold orange.  It gives the space life.

DIY idea:  stitch a large square of fabric and either drape on a wall or wrap a canvas with it to create a simple yet striking piece of art.

Adding darker tones gives this space a more formal feel.
